Health Benefits of Turmeric

Updated: Feb 1, 2019

Disclosure: I received these shots as a gift in exchange for an honest review.

By now you’re probably used to seeing ‘golden milk’ lattes and macro bowls all over Instagram tinted orange from turmeric powder. Since health + wellness are trending these days, turmeric finally seems to be getting some well-deserved attention for its long list of health benefits, the primary one being its anti-inflammatory properties. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to drown their food in this bright orange powder - which is awesome - but in all honesty I tend to get a little tired of its pungent flavor and end up eating it more rarely than I’d like. There are many health benefits to taking it in the form of turmeric pills or supplements, but people don't often know that these exist!

In case you’re a little late to the party, here’s a little rundown of why turmeric should have a place in your diet!

Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric, a distinctive bright yellow-orange root more commonly known as a spice, is native to South Asia and is actually a member of the ginger family. If you've ever noticed that they look awfully similar, now you know why. If you’ve never seen a fresh turmeric root, it may be because you’re accustomed to seeing it in powdered form on the spice shelves.

Turmeric has been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and is a staple in most Ayurvedic diets. It has been highly regarded for its range of health benefits and medical properties, most notably for its ability to help the body heal from infections and injury as well as soothe digestive issues.

There has been tons of research done about the healing properties of turmeric (nearly 9,000 studies in fact), and what they found is that turmeric’s benefits surpassed these standard Western medications and treatments:

• Anti-inflammatory drugs

• Antidepressants

• Chemotherapy

• Anticoagulants

• Pain killers

• Diabetes drugs

• Arthritis medications

• Inflammatory bowel disease drugs

• Cholesterol drugs

• Steroids

• Skin Care

• Obesity

Turmeric’s natural properties may be one of the strongest and most potent healers today. It’s main active ingredient, curcumin, has been shown to fight inflammation. Chronic inflammation is quite arguably one of the biggest contributors to many Western diseases. What’s more, curcumin also has powerful antioxidant effects which helps neutralize free radicals and stimulates the body's own antioxidants.

Antioxidants are important, fighting inflammation is paramount, and I’m all about one-stop shopping. The answer to your health woes is clearly turmeric.

Obviously if you're like me and don't want every one of your meals to turn bright orange, nor to slug down a golden milk latte every night before bed (who has time for that?!), you might be a little discouraged. I love turmeric, don't get me wrong, but adding it into your regular diet can be a little difficult.

So how to get it into your diet?

Juice! The answer to your problem might actually be more delicious than anticipated. Juice shots, featuring none other than fresh turmeric delivered straight to your doorstep. How’s that for a health-lover’s dream come true? Thanks to the internet, most of us rarely need to leave our houses to get our health-food fixes anymore, and guess what, now you don’t even have to hunt down fresh juice. You’re welcome.

Needless to say, when Pulp Story asked me to try out their new juice shots featuring none other than cold-pressed fresh turmeric (omg), I was all in. Turns out, powdered turmeric might not be the best way to benefit from all that this little powerhouse has to offer. Who knew?

The juice was delivered to my front gate in a huge box with a refrigerated cooler on the inside, keeping my little juice shots fresh and cool. Keeping the juice cold is really important for keeping the enzymes in-tact, and I was impressed that when I took them out of the box they were still fridge-cold.

Here’s what I learned about this new Los Angeles based company and why I’m stoked about their quality:

  1. Every juice shot features ginger and turmeric which fight Inflammation and deliver a powerful antioxidant punch.

  2. Only crisp turmeric and ginger roots along with fresh ripe fruits are crushed and then pressed to extract juice and vital nutrients. Fresh is better.

  3. Each juice is completely unfiltered which means it always includes a cloudy pulp - this delivers maximum health benefits.

  4. All their juice is 100% Cold-Pressed and never heated (not even during shipping!). This ensures that the juice is as fresh as if you made it yourself at home.

Unlike a lot of other juice companies out there, I was impressed that the turmeric in this shot wasn't added in its powdered form. Cold-pressing the actual root of the turmeric makes it much more rich in nutrients and health benefits, and you can tell they don't skirt the dose as it is rich in flavor and color.

As someone who is a big fresh juice fan and juices at home almost every day, I am thrilled to have been introduced to these wellness shots that deliver all the enzymes present in fresh produce. Because they are so fresh and still cold, your body can absorb all of the nutrients and enzymes quickly and efficiently. They’re super efficient to store in the fridge, easy to take like a quick shot, and give a hit of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits every single day. Just be careful taking them on an empty stomach, you might get a little queasy from the raw ginger juice (or maybe that was just me).

Pulp Story makes 4 different juice shots with some clever names, and they all taste equally fresh and delicious.

  1. Some Like it Spicy!

  2. Pomegranates of the Caribbean

  3. Cherry Poppins

  4. Turmerics of Endearment

If you're looking for the benefits of cold-pressed turmeric and ginger, looking for an overall wellness shot, or wanting to improve your juice game, these juice shots are a game changer! Be sure to check out this brand new company and let me know what you think and which one's your favorite (mine's Turmerics of Endearment!)

Wishing you health and happiness!
