Delicious and Simple Mojito Recipe (with essential oils!)
Updated: Nov 30, 2018
Mojitos are a summer and fall favorite of mine when it comes to cocktails. As someone who doesn't drink too often, I enjoy the occasional drink as a way to unwind with some simple snacks and good company on a hot California evening. Summer might be winding down, but for us here in California, we still have a month of heat left. Take the taste of summer with you with these delish, bright and fresh mojitos!
The mojito remains a classic as it is clean, elegant, and bright. It is also quite simple to make, and should be on everyone’s list of cocktails they know how to whip up on a whim. A mojito requires just a handful of basic ingredients which makes it the perfect beginners drink, or simply as an easy recipe to memorize for the future.
I’ve adapted my favorite mojito recipe to be infused with 100% pure dietary essential oils. Essential oils are one of my health staples, but I also love to incorporate dietary oils into my healthy recipes and drinks. Adding essential oils to this cocktail really upgrades the flavors and gives it a bright, summery flavor without artificial ingredients, flavors or colors.
If you don't have lime on hand or fresh mint, you can replace these ingredients with the oils! I personally like to have the fresh ingredients and the oils together, but you can make it based on what you have available.
What you’ll need:
10 fresh mint leaves (per cocktail)
Bacardi Rum (preferably white)
One cup crushed ice
Lime Vitality Essential Oil*
Spearmint Vitality Essential Oil*
Sparkling Water or La Croix (do not drink club soda, it contains TONS of sugar!)
*please do not ingest essential oils unless they are labeled for dietary use! You can get these oils here.
To infuse these drinks with essential oils, you’re going to be making flavored simple syrup! Start by making the syrup. Here’s what you’ll need:
- one cup of water
- one cup of organic white sugar
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine water and sugar and whisk until the sugar has dissolved completely. Let cool.
For the mojito, I made Lime and Spearmint using Vitality™ essential oils. These essential oils are approved and safe for ingestion (I get my oils here).
To make the flavored syrups, combine:
4 tablespoons cooled simple syrup
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
10 drops Lime Vitality™ Essential Oil
Repeat the same steps for Spearmint, but only 5 drops of the Vitality™ essential oil are needed since it is so strong!
I keep my simple syrups stored in a container like this one.
Make the Mojito
• ½ fresh squeezed organic lime
• 1 tsp flavored essential oil syrup, Lime Vitality
• 1 tsp flavored simple syrup, Spearmint Vitality
• 1 cup crushed ice
• 12 fresh mint leaves, plus small sprigs for garnish
• 2 ounces rum
• 2 tablespoons La Croix or sparkling mineral water soda
In a cocktail shaker, add mint leaves and two drops of Lime Vitality™ essential oil over one cup ice; add Bacardi then both simple syrups, shake well.
Pour mixture into a tall glass and top with La Croix or sparkling water. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs, and enjoy!
